UDAIPUR: UDAIPUR — In a major infrastructure boost for the Mewar region, the central government has granted in-principle approval for the udaipur gogunda highway expansion project. The initiative aims to transform connectivity between Udaipur and Gogunda by widening the crucial route and incorporating specialized environmental safeguards, including three dedicated wildlife underpasses to protect local fauna along the corridor.
⚡ Quick Highlights: Udaipur-Gogunda Highway Expansion: Centre Approves Forest Land & Underpasses
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), through its Gandhinagar regional office, has formally issued an in-principle clearance for the diversion of 14.6568 hectares of reserved and protected forest land. This administrative milestone paves the way for comprehensive road widening and strengthening along the Gogunda-Majawad-Udaipur-Dhar-Rampura-Sisarma-Nayakheda-Nandeshwar corridor.
Currently, commuters traveling from Balicha to Gogunda must traverse a circuitous 50-kilometer stretch via national highway arteries. However, under the newly sanctioned alignment—where the incoming road from Gogunda intersects at Sisarma—the effective travel distance will plummet to between 30 and 35 kilometers. This reduction of 15 to 20 kilometers is expected to drastically lower logistics costs, ease vehicular congestion on arterial bypasses, and streamline daily transit for thousands of residents in Mewar. “The formal in-principle approval granted on October 29 marks a transformative step for regional mobility. By streamlining the route through Sisarma and incorporating strict environmental safeguards, we achieve a balance between infrastructure growth and ecological preservation.” — Senior District Administration Official, Udaipur

The table below provides a detailed structural comparison between the existing transit corridor and the newly approved Udaipur-Gogunda highway alignment, highlighting distance metrics and environmental clearance conditions.

While the infrastructure upgrade has been greenlit, the Ministry has tied the final execution to 35 stringent conditions. These stipulations are designed to safeguard the local ecosystem, ensuring minimal disruption to the delicate flora and fauna native to the Aravalli hill ranges surrounding Udaipur.
Among the most prominent environmental mandates is the mandatory construction of three dedicated wildlife underpasses along the 39-kilometer stretch (from kilometer 0/0 to 39/0). These underpasses will serve as secure migration corridors for indigenous wildlife populations, mitigating habitat fragmentation risks. Additionally, compensatory afforestation and strict soil conservation protocols must be fully implemented before final utilization rights are handed over to executing agencies.
“Infrastructure expansion in the Aravalli region cannot come at the expense of wildlife corridors. The 35 mandated conditions, including specialized underpasses, ensure sustainable development.” — Environmental Conservation Expert, Mewar Zone

The project aims to widen and strengthen the Gogunda-Majawad-Udaipur-Dhar-Rampura-Sisarma-Nayakheda-Nandeshwar route, reducing travel distance between Balicha and Gogunda by 15 to 20 kilometers.
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted in-principle approval for the diversion of 14.6568 hectares of reserved and protected forest land.
