ISRO’s New Guwahati Facility: Space Tracking & Radar Centre

As the Earth’s orbit becomes increasingly congested, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is taking massive leaps to protect India’s multi-billion-dollar space assets. The latest milestone in this mission is the establishment of a state-of-the-art space tracking and radar facility in Chandrapur, Guwahati.

The Growing Threat of Space Debris

Space debris—ranging from defunct satellites to tiny fragments of metal from historical collisions—poses a severe threat to operational satellites and crewed space missions. Even a collision with a 1-centimeter fragment traveling at orbital speeds (roughly 28,000 km/h) can completely destroy a functioning satellite.

Currently, global Space Situational Awareness (SSA) heavily relies on data provided by NORAD and the United States Space Command. However, as India emerges as a dominant global space power, establishing independent, indigenous tracking systems is an absolute necessity.

Project NETRA: India’s Eye in Space

To combat this threat, ISRO initiated Project NETRA (NEtwork for space object TRacking and Analysis). Project NETRA aims to deploy a network of observational facilities, including advanced radars and optical telescopes, across the Indian subcontinent.

Inside the Guwahati Radar Centre

The Assam Government has officially allocated 70 acres of land in Chandrapur, near Amingaon, Guwahati, for this critical infrastructure. This facility will operate under the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC).

“This facility is a monumental step toward achieving complete self-reliance in safeguarding India’s strategic and commercial space assets.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of ISRO’s new facility in Guwahati?

The primary purpose of the facility is to enhance Space Situational Awareness (SSA) by tracking space debris and satellites. It acts as an early warning system to protect India’s space assets from orbital collisions using advanced phased array radar technology.

Where exactly is the ISRO tracking center located in Assam?

The Assam Government has allotted 70 acres of land in Chandrapur, near Amingaon, Guwahati, for the establishment of the ISRO Advanced Radar Research Centre under the ISTRAC network.

What is ISRO Project NETRA?

Project NETRA stands for Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis. It is an indigenous ISRO initiative to set up observational facilities—like radars and optical telescopes—to track, monitor, and catalog objects in space to prevent collisions.
